The Opportunity

We are looking for an internal Claims Counsel. In this role, you will play a critical part in driving the values on which our company was founded. As is the case with everyone we hire, this position will test you and push your critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills to help us solve complex problems. We’re looking for counsel who can integrate well with our claims culture.

Our perfect candidate understands the auto claims world, is financially savvy, articulates both sides of an issue with clarity, digests complex information quickly and accurately, and is comfortable making decisions. This role is vital to our claims team’s success. You will report to a Managing Attorney who reports to the Chief Claims Officer.

Root is a “work where it works best” company. Meaning we will support you working in whatever location that works best for you across the US. We will continue to have our headquarters in Columbus.

Salary Range: $140,000 - $155,000 (STI & LTI Eligible)

How You Will Make an Impact

Apply experienced insight to private passenger automobiles, contract interpretation, multi-state tort law, civil procedure, and litigation matters.

Research, draft and communicate insurance coverage opinions.

Interface with claims management, corporate legal and regulatory professionals on a variety of claims-related matters.

Support claims management with research and analysis of multi-state tort and insurance coverage laws to establish operational policies, procedures, and training programs.

Present in-person training sessions to adjuster teams and/or management on a variety of legal topics.

Draft form letters and releases.

What You Will Need to Succeed

Juris Doctor with an active license to practice law.

5+ years of relevant experience.

First-chair (jury trial) insurance defense litigation experience.

Technical understanding of property/casualty insurance principles.

Strong written and oral communication.

Possessed of intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills.

Comfort with risk analysis, flexibility and concise decision making; and,

Ability to build collaborative working relationships in a smart and dynamic environment focused on getting things done.
