The Waymo Safety team works to promote and help to continuously improve the safety of Waymo’s fully autonomous driving technology. Our experts develop safety goals and strategies, and conduct safety engineering analyses to ensure safety is being considered throughout the design and development of our vehicles. The team develops and promotes safety strategies and policies for autonomous vehicles for its work with regulatory authorities, lawmakers, law enforcement and public and non-profit organizations. Our Safety Team also helps advise on compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.

The Emergency Services Liaison - Outreach Teams are integral to ensuring that in any Waymo market, local responders have a good working knowledge of the vehicles and in-built technology, and also have the confidence to safely and effectively interact with the vehicles and riders at any operational incident.

In this role you will be hybrid based in Munich and report into our Head of Enterprise Resilience.

You will:

Drive strategic engagement and cultivate long-term trust with German emergency services by positioning Waymo as a transparent, collaborative partner committed to their safety.

Direct the recruitment and training of Emergency Services Ambassadors (ESAs) to serve as local advocates, acting as the definitive subject matter expert for all responder-related inquiries.

Spearhead the implementation and continuous improvement of Waymo’s German Emergency Services Familiarization Program by benchmarking global best practices and ensuring responders remain confident in their ability to interact safely with Waymo technology.

Serve as the voice of Waymo at industry events and panels, influencing by bridging the gap between Emergency Services and AV technology.

Architect robust Emergency Services communication that captures and channels critical feedback directly into our engineering teams, driving continuous product improvements around Emergency Services.

Orchestrate internal alignment by translating responder insights into actionable strategic improvements, ensuring our engineering and operations teams are always responsive to the evolving realities of Emergency Services.

 

You have:

15+ years of service in German emergency services (Polizei, Feuerwehr, or Rettungsdienst)

Deep understanding of German legal frameworks (Datenschutz/GDPR, Rettungskette), emergency protocols, and community engagement strategies

Proven experience in emergency response and building relationships with Emergency Services organisations such as the Berliner Feuerwehr and Polizei Berlin, along with a  strong understanding of the specific nuances and sensitivities of Emergency Services communities  in Germany.

Strong communication and presentation skills, in both German and English, capable of engaging diverse audiences, combined with an ability  to lead, motivate and develop teams, constantly striving for excellence across all areas.

A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively with legal and other internal teams, combined with experience of being able to  stay focused and deliver under competing pressures, whilst ensuring that programs remain on track and deadline targets are consistently met.

 

We prefer:

At least 7 years in a leadership or management position within one of Germany's principal emergency services, with a proven record of collaborative  inter-agency working, and the ability to engage with strategic, tactical and operational teams as required

Experience establishing organisational presence in new geographic locations, operating in rapidly scaling and complex operational environments

Familiarity with autonomous vehicle technology and its implications for emergency services.

A track record of policy development related to emergency management.

Experience in a role requiring significant public speaking and stakeholder engagement.

Travel: 

~20% travel (Domestic & International)
