About the role

We're building a new global Berlitz, and this is your opportunity to help shape it. Nearly 150 years of expertise, meeting the ambition and technology to power a new era of learning.

If you are the kind of person who thrives in a fast-paced environment, isn’t afraid of a blank page, and is excited to help shape the future of a global company undergoing a significant transformation, you might belong at Berlitz!
Berlitz has taught languages for almost 150 years, mostly in classrooms and with live teachers. Now we're putting that method in people's pockets. The Berlitz app connects structured lessons, AI speaking and writing practice, 1:1 sessions with human tutors, and visible progress into one learning loop on iOS and Android. We're launching it market by market, and growing it fast.
Our learners are professionals who need a language for their career. Some pay for themselves. Others get Berlitz through their employer, who wants proof the investment is working. Both need an app they open every day because it helps them, and keep paying for because they can see themselves getting better.
As Senior Product Designer, you'll own major parts of the learner app, from the first minute after download to the moment someone books their tenth tutor session. You'll report to the Staff Product Designer for this area of the business, and partner as an equal with Product Management, Engineering, and our AI and learning experience teams.
What you'll be doing
Design core learner journeys end to end across iOS and Android: onboarding and placement, daily learning, AI practice, tutor booking, progress, and the path from free to paid.

Design for habit and momentum. Find out why learners come back, why they drop off, and what makes them feel progress, then build that into the product.

Shape how learners speak and write with AI: conversational interfaces, real-time feedback on pronunciation and writing, and the moments where an AI tutor should hand over to a human one.

Work AI-native every day. Use AI design tools and agentic workflows to explore, prototype, and produce at speed, while staying the human in the loop who decides what's good enough to ship.

Pressure-test every PRD before it becomes a design. Question the assumptions, find the missing edge cases, and sharpen the problem with your PM, instead of passing a brief straight to a tool and accepting what comes back.

Hold AI output to a high bar. Run rigorous evals on what AI produces for craft, accessibility, localisation, and brand fit. When you see the same problem twice, fix it at the source by updating the design system.

Run research yourself. Talk to learners often, run usability tests, read the analytics, and set up experiments that tell us whether a change worked.

Own the conversion and retention moments (trials, paywalls, upgrade prompts, reminders) so they earn revenue without costing the learner's trust.

Design for corporate learners too: employer-paid access, entitlements, and the progress their company expects to see, without making the app feel corporate.

Build with Berlitz's shared design system and help it evolve, especially the mobile patterns, motion, and micro-interactions a daily-use app needs. Keep it structured so that both people and AI tools use it correctly.

Design for many markets and languages from the start, including text expansion, right-to-left scripts, and accessibility.

Work closely with engineers to ship fast, then sweat the details once it's live.

What we're looking for
Several years designing and shipping consumer mobile apps that people use every day, with a portfolio that shows native iOS and Android craft.

Evidence that your design work moved retention, engagement, or conversion, and a clear view of how you measured it.

Strong interaction and visual design. You care how a screen feels in the hand: motion, feedback, and pacing, as well as how it looks.

Hands-on research and experimentation. You've run your own interviews and usability tests, and used A/B tests and analytics to make calls.

An understanding of B2B: how a product changes when the person paying isn't the person using it, and how to serve both.

Real experience with AI design tools (currently we mostly use Claude Design) and agentic workflows. You use tools like Claude Design, Figma Make, or Paper, and AI coding tools like Claude Code daily, and you can show examples where you rejected or reworked an AI output and explain why.

Experience working within a design system and extending it.

Clear communication, and the confidence to push back on PMs, engineers, and senior stakeholders with reasoning they can act on.

Fluent English. Another language is a plus. We are a language company, after all.

Based in Germany, Switzerland, or Hungary.

Nice to have
A background in a learning, language, or content app, or another product built on a daily habit (reading, audio, fitness).

Experience with freemium and subscription models, including app store payment flows.

Experience designing for markets in Latin America or South Asia.

Experience taking work from AI design tools to code to the repo. That means pushing front-end changes yourself through pull requests and checking your work in iOS and Android simulators.

What we offer
A product that changes careers. Our learners need the language for a job, a promotion, or a move abroad. Your work helps them get there.

Real ownership, early. Large parts of the learner app are yours to shape while the product is still young.

A combination few learning apps have. A recognized learning method, a global network of human teachers, and an AI team building practice and tutoring on top.

One global Berlitz. Join a company actively rebuilding itself, with new products, new systems, and new ways of working across every team.

Remote-first flexibility, based in Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, or Netherlands.

At Berlitz, connecting people across languages and cultures is at the heart of what we do. Our global workplace reflects the diverse world we serve, bringing together different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We create an inclusive environment where everyone has an equal opportunity to belong, contribute and grow.
